Officer Down Memorial Ice Water Challenge

Our President of FOP Lodge 52 and Retired Sgt. Robert Lopez (SJPD) was Challenged (click to view) by Ryan Welch and Richard Calderon to complete Officer Down Memorial Ice Bucket challenge. What is the Officer Memorial Down Ice Challenge? Officers have called out other officers of their choosing to Donate $100 dollars to the cause, or get a bucket of ice water poured on them while being recorded on video and then donate $10 to the cause within 48 hours, if they don’t take the challenge in 48 hours.

Many of the videos have gone viral in social media and the internet. Many officers have accepted the  Officer Memorial Down Ice Challenge to honor not only those officers that have made that ultimate sacrifice, but to share the camaraderie of their brothers and sisters in law enforcement who answer the call everyday to protect, serve, and potentially sacrifice for all.

The challenge was started in San Jose by FOP Lodge 52 member, Officer Bryant Washington (SJPD), a former K9 unit officer. Bryant Washington challenged a long list of officers, among them, Sergeant Lloyd Cardone, SJPD (retired) and current East Bay Regional Parks police officer, who had this message to say in his video, “ I have been challenged by Officer Bryant. I thought he was my friend, to participate in the Officer Down Memorial fundraiser.”

Richard Calderon, retired San Jose PD Captain was also challenged by SJPD Lt. Johnson Fong, Retired Lt. Michael W. Ross Soledad, Police Chief Eric Sills & SJPD Officer Ash Ley to participated in the Officer Down Memorial Ice Bucket Challenge. Retired Captain Richard Calderon was proud to display the US flag wearing his USA boxing jersey and hat that given to him when representing the good ol’ USA in his Officer Memorial Down Ice Challenge video when calling out our President of FOP Lodge 52 and Retired Sgt. Robert Lopez (SJPD).

In addition to the Officer Memorial Down Ice Challenge, A Business owner, Danielle Bechwati, of the Secret Oasis Day Spa has committed to make a $1000 contribution to the Officer Down Memorial, because 10 active and retired officers took the icewater bucket challenge.
